Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (and I’m going with him)
For all of you that were excited for Dustin’s Friday wrap-up blog, I’m sorry to disappoint. It’s Zac again. I got thrown back into the rotation today because Dustin has the day off and we couldn’t possibly let a day go by without a blog update. So here it is.
What’s that title all about, you ask? Well, a week from today Robert (Mr. Smith) and I will be boarding a plane headed for Detroit to hang out with the good folks at the University of Michigan AND the good folks from Northwestern University as the Wildcats take on the Wolverines next Saturday at the Big House. Then, on Sunday, we’re headed to D.C. to party Oklahoma-style with Barack Obama* and our compadres from Georgetown University.
*He won’t be there.
Here’s a more detailed rundown of what is in store for us.
Friday morning, our plane departs Will Rogers World Airport in OKC. Will Rogers was a popular entertainer from Oklahoma that was killed in a plane crash. So we named our airport after him. We’ll arrive in Detroit at like 9a or something and probably roll into UM’s campus around 10 o’clock. That night we’ll be attending a UM Hockey game at Yost Ice Arena. YEAH! Love me some college hockey. I’ve only been to one college hockey game before and I’m excited to go again. For the duration of our trip, we’ll be staying at the home of the wonderful Ryan and Katie Duey. Here’s a pic of Ryan and I.
After the hockey game, we’ll probably go out with the Michigan folks and the Northwestern folks who will have just arrived in from Chicago. Last time we were in Ann Arbor, we had a blast with the whole Big Ten marketing crew. Here’s a pic of Robert, me and T-Hitz (from Northwestern). She rocks!
On Saturday, we’ll wake up bright and early and head over to the second greatest stadium in college football, the Big House. Gonna do some tailgating with Beth and her husband before and after the game, probably. And hopefully someone up there in Ann Arbor is going to take care of us in getting us into the game. Otherwise we might just sit around outside and freeze to death (it’s cold up there, ya know). Last time we were there, Robert had to kiss an old lady in exchange for tickets to the game. I think he enjoyed it but I’d hate to ask him to do that again.
After the game, I think we’re in store for a late night of hop scotch and scrabble. Not sure but I bet it will be a wild time. Duey has promised me a heavenly drink called a Banana Sip-Sop so I might have one of those at some point. It better not interfere with my ability to perform well at hop scotch though.
On Sunday, we gotta get up and say our goodbyes to the Dueys and head to the aeropuerto. That’s Spanish for, “Washington, D.C.” Because I’m cheap, I booked the cheapest flight I could get into the D.C. area which happens to be into BWI, an airport that might be closer to Detroit than to Georgetown. But alas, we’ve rented a car and will have the pleasure of fighting traffic for the hour-long trip to G’town.
This is my first trip to Washington, D.C. and I think Robert’s first as well. Really looking forward to meeting Diana and Mex for the first time and getting to see Greg again. Greg is new a G-town, having spent the past few years at UNC where we had the unbelievable good fortuna of working with him there.
Not sure what we’ll do that night but on Monday, we’ll probably spend some time gawking at G’town’s facilities n’ stuff. Is there anything else to see in D.C. or is that it? On Monday night, we get to be at the Georgetown men’s basketball home opener. Yeehaw! Really excited for that. Getting to go to new arenas and stadiums and see athletic events is my favorite thing about this job. Once again though, I hope someone at G’town knows someone who knows someone that can get us into the game. I think the old ladies in D.C. demand more in return for tickets than just a kiss… like, maybe a hug too.
Tuesday morning we don’t have much going on but by afternoon we’ll have to head the airport (that’s English for, “airport”) and come back to good ol’ Oklahoma City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty.
So I’m really looking forward to next week. The sports viewing actually begins on Sunday as we have tickets to an Oklahoma City Thunder basketball game. Then Michigan Hockey, Michigan/Northwestern Football and Georgetown basketball to finish it off. If we could only figure out a way to get tickets to the Cowboys/Redskins game in D.C. on Sunday night, it would be unbelievable. Any of you have a few extras you wanna dump off?
And last, if any of you have any suggestions of places to see or eat in D.C. that you think we should absolutely see or eat at, please let us know.
This blog was kinda boring. Sorry. Here’s something cool though. Dustin told me that MTV is now offering their entire video catalog available to view online here. So check out this video for the greatest hip hop video ever made.
