Friday Blitz

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Welcome to Friday! Still super busy so not the usual planning on today’s post, just some random bits.

(Joe McNally)

• Here’s something for ya, pretty much swiped right off of Scott Kelby’s blog, but I’m posting it here anyway because I know that despite my glowing recommendations of Mr. Scott Kelby, there are probably some of you out there who still don’t check him out every morning. (For shame.)

Joe McNally has a new class up on Kelby Training today! It’s on corporate photography and I’m betting Joe has some pretty funny stories to illustrate his points. Go check it out here.

• This is very exciting news from Apple Insider. Part of their news below:

“This year, the Mac maker is expected to showcase new families of matching, aluminum-clad MacBooks and MacBook Pros that may be priced more aggressively than its existing models.”

The event is set to take place at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday, October 14th. I can’t wait to hear what Apple has to say on that date. I’m looking to upgrade the ol’ laptop and I’ve been waiting to see what comes up. Keep your fingers crossed for truly “aggressive pricing.”

• And finally, since I feel bad about not giving you guys any photo stuff on Wednesday and I’m incredibly lazy today, here are a few shots that I’ve taken in the past several weeks. With all the photography posts that I’m always putting up I occasionally actually take some photos too. See you guys next week!

Pogo Video Review, New McNally photo book, Yousuf Karsh

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Welcome to the end of the week everybody. A few quick Friday hits:

• David duChemin, over at thepixelatedimageblog, has a video review up for the Polaroid Pogo printer that I mentioned several weeks back. You need to go here to check out the review.

• Joe McNally has a new book coming out. It’s called The Hot Shoe Diaries: Creative Applications of Small Flashes and it’s available for preorder here.

• Finally, here’s a wonderful website about the life and photography of the late, great Yousuf Karsh. Karsh was one of the masters of 20th century photography. I recently checked out a book from the local public library with a bunch of his work and I was blown away at some of the classic, iconic photos he’d taken. See his work and read the stories behind it here.

Wednesday Photo Stuff

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

“To avoid floodings on typhoon season, the city of Saitama in Japan features an impressive storm sewer system. Its construction started in 1992, and its composed by giant concrete silos (65m tall, 32m wide) connected by 6.4km of underground tunnels 50m below the surface. It also has a giant tank: 25.4m tall, 177m long and 78 wide, with 59 concrete columns.

This impressive structure is opened for tourists.”

The size and scope of this sewer system is unbelieveable. Just take a look at the truck in the picture above to get a sense of how big this project was. I’m totally blown away by it. How do they build something like this? It must take stuff like math and physics or something.  Go here to check out more pics and YouTube videos.

• Joe McNally has a really poignant blog post about the life size polaroids he took just after 9/11 and the search for a permanent home for them. The actual process of how you go about shooting a polaroid this size is amazing, but the story of the photos themselves and the people in them is even more amazing. Here’s the link to the post.

That’s it for today. See you tomorrow with more.

Thursday Speedlinks

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Hey there! Happy Thursday to you. Thanks for stopping by and here’s what’s up today:

• Joining the ranks of the online video crew is famed photographer Moose Peterson. If you don’t know Moose’s work, he’s one of the best out there when it comes to landscape and nature photography. He’s just posted a couple of videos on the new Nikon D3 so go check it out. See the videos here.

• Speaking of great photographers who are breaking into the online world in some way… Joe McNally just started a new blog and it’s already got some great content on it. Joe has shot for everybody from Time magazine to Sports Illustrated to National Geographic and besides being a fantastic photographer, he’s a pretty funny guy to boot. Check out Joe’s blog here.

• Now we move from the ranks of photography to graphic design. I’m loving the motion graphics work from Belgium-based design firm Eugene and Louise. Be sure to check out their demo reel when you’re there.

• Finally, I love design firms with concept-driven websites. The site for The World Domination Design Group lives up to all the hype that one would expect from a firm with such a name. See their work here.

That’s it for today. Check back tomorrow for the big Friday Wrap-Up!
