Random Monday Musings

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Hey everybody! I’m back in action and thanks a bunch to Zac for picking up the slack on Friday. I don’t know about you, but I think that guy has a bright future around here. ;)

Scott Kelby has another post up regarding his new Macbook Pro review and it’s pretty funny how people get easily offended when Apple gets mentioned. Especially considering Scott’s one of their biggest fans. Check it out here.

• Courtesy of our lovely coworker, Mrs. Taylor Forester, I was informed of a great deal going on at Adorama Pix for the next couple of weeks. Just like the ad says above, 16×20 pics for only $4.95! (Plus $5.95 shipping and handling. Order more than one and save yourself a little dough.) That’s a heck of a deal, I must say. And don’t worry about the Election Day Sale part. The deal runs until November 25th so get on it! I just ordered a print yesterday so I’ll let you know what I think when it gets here. Here’s the link.

• I recently read a book called A Drinking Life: A Memoir by Pete Hamill. I ran across it randomly at the public library and the title interested me for obvious reasons. (I like a good beer now and again.) Hamill’s account of a life and a culture built around drinking is sad, funny, and beautiful all at the same time. Here’s the link to Amazon.

Monday Speedlinks

Monday, July 28th, 2008

• Some cool free typefaces offered by Spanish magazine Neo2. Select your typeface and then click on “Aceptar” for the download link. Get ya some here.

• More cool news over on Scott Kelby’s blog today. There’s a Photowalk on Saturday, August 23rd in cities all across the world and the chance to win a ton of really cool prizes. Here’s the link to the site.

• Another home run for the Obama design team. That’s his campaign poster on the left which publicizes (in German) the major address he will make tomorrow in Berlin. The right is a classic example of design from the German Bauhaus movement during the early 20th century, which Obama’s poster pays tribute to. Very appropriate considering the venue and a subtle nod to German design history. (Via Meaningful Distraction)

John Nack Interview, New Lightroom Books

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Happy Friday everyone. On to the links:

• John Nack, Adobe Photoshop’s Principal Product Manager, was recently interviewed and he talks about what’s next for Adobe Photoshop, the future of digital imaging, and his blog. This is just a screenshot for those of you clicking on the play button and getting nothing. Here’s the link to the interview with John Nack.

• Adobe Lightroom 2.0 will be released very soon now and there are already two books coming out that are guaranteed to be two of the best on the topic. Martin Evening has his new book on Lightroom coming out and Scott Kelby is releasing his new book as well. Two of the best you can get so get your preorder in now. Go here to preorder Martin Evening’s book and here for Scott Kelby’s.

That’s it today. Have a great weekend and see you on Monday.

The Post-Holiday Post

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Happy Monday everyone. Welcome back after the long weekend. I hope you all had a good time and are coming back to work today with all your digits intact.

(Copyright Kareem Black)

• First up today is photographer Kareem Black. Kareem is a photographer who shoots for a diverse array of clients including Flaunt, Fader, Sony Music, GQ, Vibe and many others. I’m loving his old school campaign for Sugar Free Kool-Aid, a photo of which is shown above. In addition to that, his self-promotion campaign is pretty brilliant. He plastered posters around New York that read “Kareem Black to Marry Lindsay Lohan” as a way to drive traffic to his website. I love ideas like this. Go visit his site and check out more of his great work.

• Last Friday, while everyone had already checked out for the weekend, Scott Kelby posted an interview he did with Intellectual Property Attorney Ed Greenburg. Ed talked about many of the most common myths and misconceptions about copyright, shooting in public, model releases, and more. This is great stuff for anybody involved in a creative profession and should be at the top of your viewing list. The interview will also be included in this weeks episode of Photoshop User TV, so check it out there if you’d like. Here’s the link to Scott’s post.

That’s it today. Check back tomorrow for more!

Friday Wrap-Up

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

It’s been a crazy week at Old Hat but it’s finally come to an end. Lots of flying around, wild parties, and hard work going on. Ok, two out of three ain’t bad.

• If you’ve been reading Scott Kelby’s blog everyday like I recommended then you probably already know about his week long posting into the best lighting gear for all situations. Personally I’m salivating over Friday’s post, which is all about location lighting. Right now I’m trying to figure out what I can sell around the house to get some extra dough for all the gear he’s recommending. Hmm… I wonder how many times you can go to the blood bank in a week? Here’s the link.

• The New York Times has a great online style magazine called TMagazine. They’ve only had a couple of issues so far, but the few they do have are really cool. Some nice video interviews with celebrities like Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, and George Clooney, and some really great photography too. Check it out here.

• Finally, for some really cool sports/lifestyle photography, go check out photographer Andy Batt’s website. I’m really liking this guy’s content. See it here.

Have a great weekend everybody and see you next week!
