Indiana State wanted to find a special way commemorate the school’s 40-year anniversary of their 1979 run to NCAA Finals, complete with logo, game recaps, and videos. Old Hat worked with the marketing and sports information department at the school to dig through the archives to provide content and graphics.
The right approach wasn’t to “celebrate that time 40 years ago that we almost won”. It was important to realize what was provided by the athletic department and create a theme and logo around this incredible moment.
Our crack research team went digging and found a book about the championship game, which still stands as the most-viewed NCAA Championship game of all time. It also marked the launching of the NCAA Tournament when it became a national celebration and “March Madness” became a part of our lexicon.
Old Hat branded the event by creating a slogan, social media strategy, and logo, which was unveiled at the start of the 2018-19 basketball season. Throughout the season, the staff will re-publish game-by-game recaps, complete with box scores, through various social media outlets to “relive” the season by hour, by date, etc.
When posed with the challenge on how best to find a solution, we stuck to our core competency of “research, strategy, and creative”. The entire process was relatively simple and the ISU staff was quick to turnaround approval for each step of the project.
